Biography His bird collection contained at least forty-five cases with 270 specimens, mostly from Cornwall and passed to his nephew Francis R. Rodd. A fire in 1949 destroyed this collection. He is buried in St Clare Cemetery, between Penzance and Heamoor.

Ross, James Clark (15/04/1800 - 1862) b. London.

Biography Arctic explorer and expedition naturalist. While exploring the Melville Peninsula in June 1823, Ross shot a gull having a black ring round its neck and with a rose-tint on its breast. When the ships returned to Britain it was up to the Arctic explorer Dr John Richardson to describe the natural history material. During 1824 in January he read a paper to the Wernerian Natural History Society of Edinburgh whereby he named the new species the Cuneate-tailed Gull Larus Rossii. Obviously, in honour of the shooter.

Biography He employed two German curators. Ernst Hartert, ornithologist, was appointed in 1892, while the entomologist, Dr. Karl Jordan followed him the next year. So many papers were written in those early years about the collection that Walter had to bring out a quarterly Tring Museum journal Novitates Zoologicae which ran upto 1939. On his death all the material at Tring was bequeathed to the BMNH.

Biography Studied in Italy. Born to wealthy parents which enabled him to go on scientific exploration trips, firstly to the Sinai Desert then south along the Nile region.

Rüppell’s Warbler Curruca ruppeli Temminck, who described and named the bird in his honour, was of the opinion it was found on Crete, but Hartert thought the Red Sea or Egypt was the more likely location.
