Biography Clark & Eyre (1993: 32) say: 'Edward Hart (1847-1928) was a taxidermist who lived at Christchurch and built his collection, including many locally taken specimen, until 1897. The collection remained in Christchurch at the Bow House until 1930, when it passed to a Mrs. Hall, whose executors donated it to Stowe School. In 1950, the Director of the Leicester Museum was asked by the school to inspect the, by then decaying collection. Conservation work at Leicester saved some 290 out of of the original 400-plus cases. In 1980, the collection was split and sold. Hampshire County Council (HCC) was given the first choice and 22 cases are now housed safely in the "Red House" Museum, Christchurch, still run by the HCC; 17 cases remain at the Leicester Museum and the rest are in the Horniman Museum, London.' Biography Game-dealer. Patterson (1905) says: 'Harvey was mentioned in Pagets work as a bird-preserver and dealer in wildfowl, who "previous to the alterations in the Game Laws" sent up to the London markets on an average about fifty fowl per week through the season (October to April) - the number varying with the severity of the weather; in winter 1829, on one market day, he had brought to him four hundred wildfowl of various species, five hundred Snipes, and one hundred and fifty Golden Plovers, "all of which he immediately carried up to London and disposed of." This same Harvey was held in no high repute by local sportsmen and collectors, who were not always sure of receiving back the same birds they sent him for preservation; indeed, at times, no bird came back at all; some accident would befall a valuable and rare example by being nibbled by a rat or the cat had found it and ate it. Suspicion was not seldom aroused, and it was hinted that the true facts of the disappearance of the specimens were not altogether to the disadvantage of the taxidermist. Harvey's wife usually undertook the buying, or the taking in, of birds; and most probably knew where they went. A son followed in the father's footsteps who was both an excellent taxidermist and keen at detecting a rare bird. Nor did he always return specimens.'

Biography Temperley (1951) says: 'Another very competent Durham ornithologist was John Hogg, of Stockton-on-Tees. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Linneean Society and gave an address to the British Association at its Fourteenth Meeting at York in 1844. In his time some of the rarer species of birds visiting the country were little known and the plumage changes of ducks, divers, waders and gulls had been little studied. He made useful observations which helped to elucidate some of these problems....The next was a 'Catalogue of the Birds frequenting the Country near Stockton' by John Hogg, which originally formed part of The History of Stockton by the Rev. John Brewster, published in 1824. It was later brought up to date (1826) and reprinted as part of The Natural History of the Vicinity of Stockton by John Hogg, published in 1827. It enumerated 126 species only. On September 26th, 1844, on the occasion of the meeting of the British Association at York, John Hogg read a paper entitled 'A Catalogue of Birds observed in South-east Durham and North-west Cleveland,' which was published in The Zoologist for 1845. This was much more than a mere list and contained notes of interest on most of the 210 species included therein. This Catalogue was a very valuable contribution, but, as will be seen from the title, it was not confined to the consideration of the birds of South-east Durham alone.'

Hutchinson, John (1797 - 1855) Lanchester, Co. Durham.
Bird Notes Recorded and preserved the 1829 Durham Rose-coloured Starling.
Biography Temperley (1951) says: 'An even more valuable and interesting MS. catalogue, entitled 'Birds of Durham 1840,' was written by John Hutchinson, of Lanchester (1797-1855). This catalogue not only assessed in some detail the status of each species in the County at the time of writing, but gave particulars of its distribution and habits. It therefore provides a reliable basis for a. comparison between conditions a century ago with those of to-day and thus makes possible the task of the present writer. This MS., in two volumes, together with a volume on "Durham Fishes, Reptiles and Quadrupeds," has only recently been brought to light, having been found in a second-hand book-shop by Dr. H. M. S. BIair, who has very generously presented it to the library of the Natural History Society. Ample quotations from this MS. will be found throughout this History. ... Another local ornithologist was John Hutchinson (1797-1855) of Durham and Lanchester, whose MS. Catalogue entitled "Birds of Durham, 1840," has already been mentioned. As his work as a naturalist has hitherto been overlooked, the following biographical sketch may be of interest. He was born in Durham, where his father resided, on April 21st, 1797. His father was John Hutchinson (1767-1831) of Kyo and Riding Hills, Co. Durham, Alderman of Durham and Mayor in 1797, 1808, 1817 and 1835. His mother was Mary (1773-1844) eldest daughter of Alan Greenwell, of Greenwell Ford, Lanchester. Both families owned land in Lanchester parish for many generations. John was educated at Durham Grammar School. He wished to enter the Church; but by his father's desire was articled to a solicitor in Durham. After a year in a London office (1820-21), he was admitted a Solicitor, but he did not practice; though he was Town Clerk of Durham in 1825, the year of his father's last mayoralty. He had, however, a small appointment as Clerk to the Lanchester Magistrates. After his father's death in 1831, he went to live in Lanchester, in a small house near the church, on a site now covered by an inn, with a good garden going down to the Smallhope Burn. When about 50 he married, but his wife died soon after leaving no children. There are no records of his having associated with other local naturalists, but he was a Fellow of the Linnaean Society and was in correspondence with William Yarrell, F.L.S., F.Z.S. His MSS. show that he was in close touch with the Durham University Museum and its curator, William Proctor. He had a large collection of mounted specimens of birds. His MS. volumes on birds, to which reference has already been made, were two in number and were entitled "Birds of Durham 1840" and were evidently begun in that year. He was an exceptionally good angler and greatly interested in fish, as a companion MS. volume "Durham Fishes, Reptiles and Quadrupeds" shows. Another MS. volume entitled "Plants of Durham, including Trees, Ferns, Mosses, Lichens, Algae and Fungi" has, unfortunately, not survived. None of his work was ever published. In his middle age he was somewhat of a recluse. He died at the age of 58. A tablet to his memory in All Saints Church, Lanchester, reads "John Hutchinson, F.L.S., born 1797 died 1855.'
