Robert Calvert, of Bishop Auckland (1815-1891), in his 'Geology and Natural History of the County of Durham,' published in 1884, compiled a list of birds containing 205 species. Many of the records of the rarer species he copied, not always correctly, from the Catalogues of Selby and Hancock and for many of his other records he gave insufficient data, so that their authenticity cannot now be established.'

Biography Editor and sub-editor of Scottish Naturalist from 1891-1931. Visited Fair Isle for five consecutive autumns, 1905-1909, remaining for five weeks on each occasion; and three visits in spring - namely in 1909, 1910 and 1911. Arrived on 4th September 1908 for five weeks. On his first two visits he was assisted by Norman B. Kinnear (British Museum), and they both trained George Stout to be bird recorder for Fair Isle. Visited the Flannan Isles with Mr. T. G. Laidlaw for sixteen days in the autumn of 1904 from 6th to 21st September, staying on Eilean Mor. Visited Sule Skerry, Orkney on 22nd September 1904. Visited St Kilda in 1910 with George Stout on 1st September and stayed until 8th October. Returned with George Stout in 1911 on 1st September staying to 12th October. Percy H. Grimshaw writing in Scottish Naturalist 1938: 97-98, says: 'We deeply regret to record the death, which took place on 10th May last, of one who was intimately associated with this Journal for a period well exceeding forty years. Dr Eagle Clarke became sole Editor of The Scottish Naturalist in 1891, and the following year, when the Journal became the property of Mr J. A. Harvie-Brown (under the name of The Annals of Scottish Natural History), he took up the position of Acting-Editor (in conjunction with Mr Harvie-Brown and Professor J. W. H. Trail), acting in this capacity without a break until the year 1931. From that time until 1934 he remained on the Editorial Staff, but the gradual failure of his health compelled the cessation of his long services to Scottish natural history, the value of which it is difficult to exaggerate. A glance at our long series of volumes will show that, in addition to his labours as Chief Editor, Dr Clarke contributed to our pages a large number of important papers and notes on Scottish vertebrates of all classes; and that although his name must always be especially associated with birds, his contributions to our knowledge of Scottish mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fishes are too important to be overlooked. His outstanding work, however, was in connection with the phenomena of bird-migration. For the personal study of this important subject he sacrificed his annual leave for many years. During many migration seasons he paid visits, often with much discomfort, to such out-of-the-way stations as the Eddystone Lighthouse, the Kentish Knock Lightship (off the Thames estuary), Fair Isle, the Flannan Islands, St Kilda, Sule Skerry, and the Isle of Ushant, off the coast of Brittany. The information thus gained by such constant devotion to problems which had always attracted his attention enabled him to publish, in 1912, his magnum opus, entitled, Studies in Bird Migration, the two volumes of which soon acquired a world-wide reputation. In addition to his researches on migration, Dr. Clarke made many contributions to our knowledge of the birds of other lands. He studied bird-life personally in Holland, the delta of the Rhone, the Pyrenees, the Faroes and Iceland, and worked out the ornithological results of the Scottish Antarctic Expedition, the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition to Franz Josef Land, wrote a series of papers on the birds of the Philippine Islands, and a large number of papers and notes in various Journals, the details of which cannot be given in this place. He also revised and rewrote the third edition of Saunders Manual of British Birds (1927); wrote (jointly with W. D. Roebuck) A Handbook of Yorkshire Vertebrata (1881); and co-operated with Nelson in The Birds of Yorkshire (1907). He was also one of the authors of Bartholomew's Atlas of Zoogeography, which appeared in 1911. Dr Eagle Clarke was born in Leeds in 1853, and was thus in his eighty-sixth year at the time of his death. He was educated in his native town, and first took up business there as a land surveyor. His keen love of natural history, however, soon led to his renouncing a business career and to his being offered the Curatorship of the Leeds (Philosophical Society's) Museum, a position he occupied until 1888. In that year he obtained, by special appointment, an Assistantship in the Museum of Science and Art, Edinburgh (now the Royal Scottish Museum). He was eventually promoted to the Keepership of the Natural History Department in that Museum, from which position he retired in 1921. For his services in the Museum he was awarded the I.S.O. in 1920, and for his researches in bird-migration the University of St Andrews conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL.D. He also received the Godman-Salvin medal from the British Ornithologists' Union, of which he was at one time President. He was a past-President of the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh and of the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union, and an honorary Fellow of many foreign Societies.' See Scottish Birds 14: 153-156.

Recorded the rejected 1901 Hampshire Great Snipe. Recorded and examined the 1901 Hampshire Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Reported the 1902 Hampshire Glossy Ibis to Kelsall & Munn. Recorded the 1904 Hampshire Roller.
Biography George Bentley Corbin was born at Ringwood on February 8, 1841, and was educated at the National Schools, which he quitted at an early age in order to follow the trade of his father, a cabinet-maker and upholsterer. Anxious to continue his education, he became a pupil at the Evening Classes in connection with the Hants and Wilts Adult Educational Society, and his latent gifts rapidly developed.
As a boy he indulged an early love for birds, flowers, and insects. The New Forest and the Valley of the Avon were his favourite haunts, with almost every nook and cranny of which he became familiar. During his youthful collecting days, he conducted the Amateur Naturalist, a MS. magazine, which circulated amongst subscribers throughout the British Isles. He contributed notes to Science Gossip and other periodicals, and in 1862 an article on “The Macro - lepidoptera of Ringwood” to Newman's Zoologist, from which time, for upwards of forty years, he was a frequent contributor (chiefly, however, of short notes) to the Zoologist and Entomologist. One of his most important records in the former journal was “On the occurrence of the Needle-tailed Swift for the second time in England” (1880). The bird was, at his death, still in his possession, and will eventually be added to the National Collection at South Kensington.
He assisted the Rev. J. E. Kelsall, with others, in the compilation of a briefly annotated list of the Birds of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, published in the Proc. Hants Field Club, 1890. This led up to the more complete list, with specific remarks, which he wrote for Dent’s County Guide to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (1900). He also assisted Kelsall and Munn in the larger work on The Birds of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (1905). He died March 12, 1914.

He went as a young man to live at Great Cotes, Lincolnshire (which was his residence for the remainder of his life), and devoted much of his time to working the coasts of Lincolnshire and especially the Humber district. During his lifetime he was President of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union in 1893, and also for Yorkshire in 1896 of their Naturalists' Union. He wrote the Birds of the Humber District (1872) and in 1899 a more concise edition titled, A List of British Birds belonging to the Humber District. Some of his records were accepted without critical examination and need to be used with caution (Smith & Cornwallis, 1955). A visit to Heligoland in 1874, when he formed an acquaintance with Gatke, was the principal cause of his taking up the study of migration, on which he became a leading British authority. In 1879 he joined Mr. Harvie-Brown in a scheme for obtaining reports on the subject from the keepers of lighthouses and lightships, and at the Swansea meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science was appointed secretary of a Committee to carry out this plan. His main interest with birds was on migration, where he wrote many notes to The Zoologist between 1864-99. Birded with Howard Saunders and Eagle Clarke.
He died at his residence at Great Cotes on August 1, 1899, in his sixty-ninth year.

Biography M. D. Penhallurick (1978) says: 'Apart from his training at Guy's and St Thomas' medical schools in 1808-1809, Couch never strayed far from his native village. He was an all round naturalist, unquestionably the most talented in the west of England. His History of the Fishes of the British Islands (4 vols, 1860-65) was a standard work still valued today. At a local level, his notes on birds in his Cornish Fauna (1838, Supplements, 1841, 1844), his Illustrations of Instinct (1847), and many papers scattered through journals, including the Zoologist, as early as 'The Imperial Magazine' in 1822, are quite considerable.' Robinson (2003) adds: 'Born at Polperro in 1789 and after training as a Doctor in London he returned to west Cornwall.' Correspondent to Sir William Jardine.
