Bolam (1912) says: 'Foremost amongst later Northumbrian ornithologists, who are no longer with us, must be mentioned Charles Murray Adamson whose writings in the Field, and elsewhere, never failed to be interesting owing to their obviously original and first-hand observations. Especially useful are his notes on the changes of plumage in shorebirds, and waders, chiefly reproduced in one or other of his privately printed, and unassuming volumes - Sundry Natural History Scraps, more especially about Birds (1879): Some more Scraps about Birds (1880-81): 'Another Book of Scraps', principally relating to Natural History (1882); and Some more Illustrations of Wild Birds, showing their Natural Habits (1887) - which likewise contain a pretty full catalogue of the local birds in his extensive collection, some of which have since his death been gifted to the Hancock Museum by his daughter. He was a frequent visitor to Holy Island, where many of his studies of shore-birds were made, and whence he from time to time recorded rarities in the publications of the Berwickshire, or Newcastle Clubs, of each of which he was a member. He died about the end of 1894.'
